Piet Hein Merckens to be appointed as new CEO Wessanen

Utrecht, January 13, 2010

Royal Wessanen nv announces that the Supervisory Board will propose to appoint Piet Hein Merckens as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Executive Board of Royal Wessanen nv at the next Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGM). This meeting is scheduled for April 14, 2010. Mr. Merckens will start on April 1st 2010 as Member of the Executive Board with a focus on Wessanen Europe and become CEO of Royal Wessanen as per June 1st 2010.

Durk Jager, chairman of the Supervisory Board, comments: “We are very pleased with the arrival of Piet Hein Merckens as new CEO. With extensive experience in fast moving consumer goods and in international organizations, we believe that Piet Hein is the right person to lead Wessanen in achieving its ambition to become the Organic+ food champion in Europe”.

Mr Merckens (1962) is currently responsible for the Sara Lee Coffee & Tea Retail activities in the Netherlands, Poland and Greece. Under his leadership, the Dutch Sara Lee coffee and tea businesses were successfully restructured, a cost containment program was executed and new growth initiatives were deployed. Prior to this post he held several other prominent positions within Sara Lee. He started his career at Procter & Gamble in 1989 after graduating in law from the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. Details of his remuneration package will be made available in the convocation for the AGM in April.

As per June 1st 2010, Frans Koffrie will step down as interim CEO. At the AGM it will be proposed that as per June 1st 2010, Mr. Koffrie will be re-appointed member of the Supervisory Board. Mr. Koffrie was a member of the Supervisory Board from 2001 until 2009 when he stepped down in view of assuming the role of interim CEO of the Company.
