Investments in equity and debt securities

Financial instruments held for trading are classified as current assets and are stated at fair value, with any resultant gain or loss recognised in the income statement. Held-to-maturity assets are stated at amortised cost less impairment losses.

Other investments held by Wessanen are classified as being available for sale and are stated at fair value, with any resultant gain or loss recognised directly in other comprehensive income, except for impairment losses and, in the case of monetary items, foreign exchange rate gains and losses. When these investments are derecognised, the cumulative gain or loss previously recognised directly in equity is recognised in the income statement. Where these investments are interest-bearing, interest calculated using the effective interest method is recognised in the income statement.

Dividends received are recognised upon declaration.

Inventories
Inventories are stated at the lower of cost and net realisable value. The cost of inventories is based on the first-in first-out principle, and includes expenditure incurred in acquiring the inventories and bringing them to their existing location and condition.

In the case of manufactured inventories and work in progress, cost includes an appropriate share of production overheads based on normal operating capacity. Inventory is valued net of vendor allowances if applicable.

Net realisable value is the estimated selling price in the ordinary course of business, less the estimated costs of completion and selling expenses.
